The Swish blog Idea!
I also did a quick test so I could get a hands on feel for it.

I have amended the initial idea of doing a standard swish blog set to music for my projected visuals to instead making it far more abstract by making the pans themselves the main focus of the film. I will achieve this by stopping after the pans for only a few frames before moving on. Also unlike the test for the idea i'll be using a wider variety of different locations and times of day to different colours and shades in my pans.

Photo motion is very similar to stop motion with the only difference being that instead of the objects moving it is the camera that moves constantly. For example taking a picture after every three or four steps.

In film and television, a production designer is the person responsible for the overall look of a filmed event such as films, TV programs, music videos or adverts. Production designers have one of the key creative roles in the creation of motion pictures and television. Working directly with the director and producer, they must select the settings and style to visually tell the story. The term "production designer" was coined by William Cameron Menzies while he was working on the film Gone with the Wind. Previously (and often subsequently) the people with the same responsibilities were called "art directors."

From early in pre-production, the production designer collaborates with the director and director of photography to establish the visual feel and specific aesthetic needs of the project. The production designer guides key staff in other departments such as the costume designer, the key hair and make-up stylists, the special effects director and the locations manager (among others) to establish a unified visual appearance to the film.

V/O: Hi, I’m Alex Shutti. I’ve decided on moving image as my pathway for next year. But before I get to talking about moving image and how it became my choice lets have a look at the other two I’m not doing and my reasoning behind dropping them.

Scene 2: Animation/Virtual Environments

V/O: When I joined the course I joined with the intention of doing either animation or film in my mind, my main reasons for my interest in animation comes mainly from my gaming hobby. (Editing ideas/On-Screen: here cut to gaming scenes that I liked) But after actually doing some animation I came to realise that although it was interesting and I enjoyed coming up with ideas and exploring them I didn’t really enjoy the long periods of time sat alone, (On-screen: cut to a lonely Alex hating life) or the stress of rendering, (On-screen: Cut to Alex with head resting on hand bored, head slips of and hits keyboard, no movement after…K.O!) Also quite frankly I wasn’t that good at it as I found the interface of 3ds max made me more confused than a baby in a strip club. (On-screen: Alex’s wtf face.) But uh, I guess what I learned from Virtual Environments I might be able to use in film one day? Maybe? (On-screen: Alex stares at camera for a few seconds and shakes his head)

V/O: Out of the three practices this was the one that I had the least interest in, although I found I wasn’t as terrible at it as I thought I was going be at first. The things that backed up a forgone conclusion not to do IM were the long periods of time alone typing and editing code which I found repetitive and uninteresting. The isolation did not suit me well! Although, I did find with a good music playlist while coding I’d enter a weird zone where I was just doing the work without really thinking about it too much and enjoying the music/quiet time. (On-screen: Alex typing bored/ cut to finger pressing play on ipod /cut to work getting done while alex is typing stevie wonder style)

Moving image; my favourite of the three pathways I chose because it suited me best. This is mainly because I work well in groups in getting tasks done, as well as the fact I find it more enjoyable. And that I believe myself to be quite good at it as well.

The main three things that have inspired me to do this are: the originality of some modern film concepts, Auteur Theory (and the hope that one day I could have my own recognisable style) and also the quotability of films and how it can influence pop culture.

Originality: Christopher Nolan and others

Christopher Nolan is a director that over recent years has become famous for his directing of original film plots and scenes. Movies such as memento with its dual narratives; with one running chronologically and in black and white, whilst the other runs reverse chronologically in colour until they converge at the climax of the film. Another film of Nolan’s which is highly original is Inception.

Apart from Nolan’s films other movies that inspire me to take up moving image due to their originality include:

Ferris Bueller: breaks fourth wall

500 days of summer – which tells the story in an almost random order jumping between major events within a period of 500 days.

Crash- Which plays on the theory of ‘six degrees of separation’ by telling closely interwoven narratives ( has been referred to as hyperlink cinema) whilst the characters remain ignorant.

Quotability: Guy Ritchie and others

This could be seen as a bit of a strange thing to inspire me but funnily enough movies that are so memorable that I can quote them really do have a big effect on why I want to do film. I think it really shows that the director has got something right if years after watching a film someone can word for word quote lines. I think Guy Ritchie is pretty good at this as Films like Snatch and Lock Stock and Two smoking barrels I personally quote from time to time.

Auter Theory: Tarentino and others

Whilst on the field trip to London I came across the work of Floris Neusüss in the ‘Shadow Catchers’ Exhibition at the V & A Museum. After looking at his work his distinctive style reminded me of the Auter theory and why it is an important aspect to why I would like to do film.

Auter theory is the idea that a director’s film reflects the director's personal creative vision. Because of this Auters can often have a distinctive style in their work which sets them apart from others. Examples of Auters include Tarentino, Frank Miller, and a personal favourite of mine Park chan wook. (put scenes from all of their movies in)

I was on twitter the other day and saw a tweet that said:

I think this is what I want to aim for. Not copy someone elses style but come up with my own and be known for it. Even if I have start as a runner and work my way up a difficult industry.

I could use a similar style for the walls of my animation to give the idea of blood running down and slowly building up. I've found this fluid simulation tutorial that might help which is good. A bit worried that it might not come out as planned but I think it's at least worth trying.

Also for the rest of the theme for the ride i'm thinking 7 deadly sins, I might not be able to have all 7 but i should be able to use a few of them...

Jim Jarmusch’s Golden Rules of Directing

I happened to come across rule #5 in that random way you tend to come across stuff on the internet, where I have completely no idea what led me to it besides randomly clicking links... Anyway it struck me so I googled it and got the other rules. Food for thought eh?

Jim Jarmusch-

Rule #1: There are no rules. There are as many ways to make a film as there are potential filmmakers. It’s an open form. Anyway, I would personally never presume to tell anyone else what to do or how to do anything. To me that’s like telling someone else what their religious beliefs should be. Fuck that. That’s against my personal philosophy—more of a code than a set of “rules.” Therefore, disregard the “rules” you are presently reading, and instead consider them to be merely notes to myself. One should make one’s own “notes” because there is no one way to do anything. If anyone tells you there is only one way, their way, get as far away from them as possible, both physically and philosophically.

Rule #2: Don’t let the fuckers get ya. They can either help you, or not help you, but they can’t stop you. People who finance films, distribute films, promote films and exhibit films are not filmmakers. They are not interested in letting filmmakers define and dictate the way they do their business, so filmmakers should have no interest in allowing them to dictate the way a film is made. Carry a gun if necessary.

Also, avoid sycophants at all costs. There are always people around who only want to be involved in filmmaking to get rich, get famous, or get laid. Generally, they know as much about filmmaking as George W. Bush knows about hand-to-hand combat.

Rule #3: The production is there to serve the film. The film is not there to serve the production. Unfortunately, in the world of filmmaking this is almost universally backwards. The film is not being made to serve the budget, the schedule, or the resumes of those involved. Filmmakers who don’t understand this should be hung from their ankles and asked why the sky appears to be upside down.

Rule #4: Filmmaking is a collaborative process. You get the chance to work with others whose minds and ideas may be stronger than your own. Make sure they remain focused on their own function and not someone else’s job, or you’ll have a big mess. But treat all collaborators as equals and with respect. A production assistant who is holding back traffic so the crew can get a shot is no less important than the actors in the scene, the director of photography, the production designer or the director. Hierarchy is for those whose egos are inflated or out of control, or for people in the military. Those with whom you choose to collaborate, if you make good choices, can elevate the quality and content of your film to a much higher plane than any one mind could imagine on its own. If you don’t want to work with other people, go paint a painting or write a book. (And if you want to be a fucking dictator, I guess these days you just have to go into politics...).

Rule #5: Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery—celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from—it’s where you take them to.”

Dog Life - My First Short Film

Evaluation:
The Project title for this project was "Interpretation" where we were given a script and the task was to make it our own. Of the roles available (Producer, director, camera & lighting, sound design and production and editor) I was given the controlling role of director which I was quite happy to fulfil as it’s the role I found most interesting personally although I was a little bit worried that if my vision for the film didn’t work then inevitably blame would fall mostly on my head!

The first and most obvious thing I did was read the script which we were given entitled ‘Dog’ which upon first reading didn’t exactly help my worries of directing as it isn’t exactly the most ordinary narrative I have read! After reading though, initial ideas started flowing and after asking other group members on their opinions on scenes and whether they would work well or if they were even possible a non-visual storyboard of just text was formed. From this I went away and with the script and current storyboard in mind researched and brainstormed issues that I’d have to tackle making the film such as:

• Why does the character eat dog food or do we not find out why?

• How am I going to get my actor to eat dog food?

Does the character have a name?

• Do we ever see him speak?

After this we as a group had a final conversation on the more subtle aspects of how the film should look and sound until finally a visual storyboard was drawn. Personally I think that this pre-production aspect of the film could not have gone any better as it was all done very efficiently.

When it came to the actual production of our short film a problem instantly came in that the actor we initially had for the film decided that he no longer wanted to take part so our former lighting person became our actor which majorly slowed down the setting up time for scenes. Another thing I found is that some people took direction worse than others and at times it almost felt like there were 6 directors on the set, which in some ways was good as I think the creative arguments did increase production value but at the same time also slowed down production pace.

While editing I was quite happy with how it looked and sounded so I mostly left the editor to do his job with only a few minor pointers after a first rough edit was shown to me and overall I’m pretty happy with the final outcome. The only downside to the edit is that I was actually against including the ‘who let the dogs out?’ sing a long in the credits, but I can’t have it all apparently!

Narratives should be about struggles.

Dog

1. INT . KITCHEN . DAY

Cupboard doors are flung open and rapidly slammed as the cupboards are revealed as empty. Eventually….. one cupboard is opened and shut quickly and then re-opened. We see inside. There is a dog bowl, and a tin of dog food. [Freeze frame]

Man (V/O)

Ordinarily I wouldn’t have considered it but…….

Camera will be in the cupboard in darkness, the doors open to revel the mans face looking in. He will look disappointed for the first 4 cupboards, then face lights up as he opens the fifth. The camera will be half blocked by a tin of dog food, then a reverse shot from the mans perspective of the dog food and dog bowl on the bottom shelf.

2. INT . KITCHEN . DAY

The plate of dog food sits on the table . The knife and fork are straightened to become perfectly aligned.
The man gently drops a sprig of parsley onto the dog food.
He picks up the knife and fork and stares at the plate.

Directly above view just shows the dog food and cutlery on the table at first, no arms. One arm comes in to straighten the cutlery, and place the parsley sprig. Both arms then pick up the cutlery, scene cut.

3. INT . LANDING . DAY

From outside the toilet we hear a difficult shit taking place.

Focus on the toilet door, sounds of a difficult shit, and cut to a clock which winds forwards 3 hours, then seeing the toilet flush and the door begin to open.

4. EXT . STREET . DAY

Our man is walking down the street. He has a distinct, pronounced spring in his step.

Our man will be walking down the street whistling to himself, smile on.

5. EXT . STREET . DAY

We see our man sitting in a café. He is talking ten to the dozen.

We will be using the student union café (costa part) and have our man speaking really fast and not really making much sense. ( Mr.Bean style)

6. INT . KITCHEN . DAY

Our man unloads his shopping. Tins and tins of dog food, plus some herbs and milk.

We are going to have the camera in the shopping bag, looking up the mans arm towards his face, trying to portray that it is part of the shopping, then we will see the bag being put down on the table, and the camera will be unpacked and put on the table with the cans of dog food, like it is a can of dog food.

7. INT . KITCHEN . DAY

What follows is a montage of a series of jump cuts as plates of dog food are eaten, piled up, eaten, plates clean, knife and fork switching sides and spoon and fork. Different plates. Each time a sprig of parsley is left on the plate uneaten, sometimes the plate is a bowl.

8. INT . LANDING . DAY

From outside the toilet, we hear a difficult shit taking place. It is so difficult our man is still trying to defecate as day turns into night.

We see our man going into the toilet, then we have a shot of out the window, but still with the sound of the man trying to shit. Day turns to night, and then we go back to seeing our man leave the toilet.

9. EXT . PARK . DAY

Our man studies a pile of dog shit. Slowly he stands and shuffles off, almost under his breath we hear him growl

Filmed from dog shit perspective , very close up shot, just see a nose drop into shot from the top of the frame

10. INT . FRONT ROOM . NIGHT

Our man sits and watches television, picking up his glass of water he begins to lap it up with this tongue.

Very dark scene, using the television light to flicker different amount s of light onto the characters face. Extreme close up when he laps up the water.

11. INT . KITCHEN . DAY

Our man slowly spoons dog food onto his plate, the plate is maller than any we have seen before

We will shoot this with exactly the same view as with the bigger plate, so that the plate is noticeably smaller.

12. INT . KITCHEN . DAY

Sitting at the table our man slowly, reluctantly eats the dog food, as he turns to eat, tears run down his face.

Shot from the opposite persons view so you are looking straight at him, the camera switches between that persons view and an extreme close up of the character chewing.

13. INT . FRONT ROOM . NIGHT

Our man runs around in a very tight circle, He is trying to see his back, as he runs he barks.

Filmed through the window, a shot for a woman walking her dog and noticing the strange behaviour so come to peek through the window and we get he point of view shot.

eXistenZ

Narrative:

The narrative in the film is highly original concept where multiple layers are used to create narrative within narrative with the plot device of having a game within a game. Also the narrative is reciprocal as it returns directly to how it begins with the ending.

Interactivity:

eXistenZ has the concept of interactivity as it leaves the interpretation of what is going on in the plot entirely up to the viewer allowing them to choose whether scenes are reality or in game and the viewer could even decide the whole film is in actual fact just part of a game as the ending mirrors the beginning of the film.

Convergence:

The film has convergence as it merges reality with the game world.(?)

CRAP Poster.

I chose to re-design this poster that we looked at in the lecture last week as the original was a complete mess with different fonts and colours spread out all over the place with no real order at all.

Contrast:

For contrast for this poster I did two things; the first was that I used a Serif font for the title, opening times and categorios of clothing. The second thing that I did was contrasted the black text with a white glow around it which also made it easier to read against the dark background and no text was 'lost' or hard to see.

Repitition:

I used the same blending options (White outer glow/ Drop Shadow) on every single bit of text as well as the fact I repeated the same two fonts throuought the poster.

Alignment:

All of the text in this poster is left aligned so that it looks more sophisticated, which was not the case for the original.

Proximity:

I grouped the pictures together, created categories for male and female clothing and had the opening times completly seperate which i think gives the poster good proximity.

These three images are of my drawings from the art class we had recently. I definitely make no claims that im a particularly good drawer so the class was a bit of a challenge for me.

The top image was my first attempt at drawing the negative space around three chairs that were thrown together.

The middle immage is my second attempt at drawing the negative space around a set of chairs although on that occassion there were more chairs. For this drawing Deborah gave me the advice to try and not force the drawing to look like chairs and instead let the shapes just come out.

The third and final image is of the sketches i drew to portray several different positionings of a human body.

Rationale for interactive Spaces

My design intention for this interactive space was to create something that reflects me personally and gives information about the personality of the creator. I used a mixture of straightforward photography and creating collages on Photoshop of images to create pages. Also all of the index type pages have been created by taking photos of text I have written on paper as I thought it would give the project a far more personal touch if the user could see my rushed handwriting.

How I came up with the idea of using handwritten text as the main portion of the project came when I was sitting at my desk for about an hour brainstorming possible ideas. Eventually boredom set in and I started doodling; scribbling ‘HI’ in rough sketch form on a sheet of paper, this was to become the very first page of my project.

When creating the Photoshop collages of images I decided to create it in such a way that it seemed like a pile Polaroid photos were piled on top of each other and scattered for two of the pages while two other collages I wanted the effect of posters piled on top of each other and scattered. I did this by adding white boxes around each image merging the layers together and then rotating them randomly so it looked as if they had just been thrown down. I also added a drop shadow blending option to each individual layer so that each image stood out from the others.

When editing the html initially had a lot of frustrations with it as my images were not showing up and I couldn’t understand why, but when I finally got it working the idea transported reasonably well from my mind to the computer.

Xbox Live is an online gaming service for the Xbox 360 gaming console developed by Microsoft. It costs approximately £35 pounds a year and is currently the only online gaming service on consoles that charges.

My Interest in Xbox Live comes from the mainly the multiplayer gaming aspect as I can often be found playing team based games with friends online such as ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ but other interesting aspects to Xbox Live include:

Facebook and Twitter applications have been added which allow people to update statuses, tweet as well as being able to check if their Facebook friends have Xbox Live accounts or if their Xbox Live friends have Facebook pages with the ‘Xbox live friend finder’ and the ‘Facebook friend finder’.

Allowing users to connect to their very own online radio station of music similar to their own individual tastes.

After completing games I personally don’t think their replay value is very good most of the time and this feature helps remedy that with expansion packs for games which can increase their lifespan.

Our groups practice at 3 point lighting. We also played about with reflectors which is why Harriette is glowing gold.

According to Deborah our lighting was pretty good, which was a step in the right direction.

Tom Stockbridge was sitting in on our groups brainstorming session and when I showed the group the video that is the inspiration of our one shot he then decided his group would do a similar thing.

Design Process for my last piece of work

The piece of work that I’m going to look at my design process for is my A2 Photography Exam. The design process started with me being giving the brief that the work must follow which was 'Passions and Obsessions' which I eventually developed into Religion and after that the Seven Deadly Sins.
My initial step in the process was to create a mind map of all the various ideas that I could think of to do with the brief and then for each possible idea or related aspect I tried to link it back to how it could be used in my work. When I was done with this I developed my text mind map into visual terms by collecting images that could be used for inspiration for the selected idea. These images comprised of existing work by famous photographers and artists as well as amateur photographers on websites such as Deviant Art and Flickr.
I also looked at a range of contextual sources to give myself better understanding such as:

· Dante’s Inferno

· Dante’s Divine Comedy: Inferno By Dante Alighieri

· The Bible

· Se7en

After a very long planning process I began visually responding to all that I had collected, improving and adjusting as seen here:

After various visual responses I looked back across what I had done and decided what I thought worked well, what I enjoyed doing most as well as asking other people such as teachers and friends which photos worked best until eventually I came to the outcome of creating my own new set of deadly sins as there was a massive back log of work for the existing sins and my work would not be particularly groundbreaking if I just went along with the crowd. I developed these new 7 sins after brainstorming which I think are problems that reoccurring in society today:

Bad Parenting
Drug taking & Trafficking
Environmental Pollution & Littering
Inequality
Morally Debatable Experiments
Paedophilia
Pessimism

I took photos for each one and presented them on old style paper for marking.

I was just looking about on youtube at oneshots and this one was similar to a potential idea someone in my group had for our project. I've shown it to most of the other group members so hopefully we can use this as a template to build on if we do go in this direction.
